Sir James was born in 1586 in Cranston, Riddel, Midlothian, Scotland.  Sir James' father was David Makgill and his mother was Mary (Marie) SaintClair Sinclair.  His paternal grandparents were Sir James Makgill and Jane Elizabeth Adamson; his maternal grandfather is Not Filled and his maternal grandmother was Sibil Saint Clair Cockburn. He had five brothers and two sisters, named David of Cranston-Riddle, Patrick, Thomas, John, John, Elizabeth and Anna.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 77 in 1663 in Cranstoun Riddel, Midlothian, Scotland.

‌Sir James and Christian were married in a religious ceremony on July 8th, 1646 in Scotland.  They had a son and a daughter, named Robert and Christian.

They had five sons and two daughters, named Robert, James, Patrick, Andrew, Robert, Elizabeth and Anne.
