Sir John II was born about 1515 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian, Scotland.  Sir John II's father was Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and his mother was Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston.  His paternal grandparents were John Cockburn and Margaret Hepburn. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ninian, Alexander, Ninian, Marion, Margaret and Lady Helen.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died on November 22nd, 1583 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland (had a stroke on High Street).

‌Sir John II and Alison of Calder Lady Cockburn of Ormiston were married in a religious ceremony in 1543 in East Lothian, Scotland.  They had eleven sons and four daughters, named Alexander John, SIR JOHN, Sir John Jr., Samuel, William, Alexander, John 9th Baronet of Ormiston, Sir John, Sir John, Samuel of Wester Tempilhall In The Constabulary of Haddington, Patrick, Alison, Lady Barbara, Sibil and Lady Janet.
