Ninian was born in 1515 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Ninian's father was Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and his mother was Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. His paternal grandparents were John Cockburn and Margaret Hepburn. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ninian, Alexander, Sir John II, Marion, Margaret and Lady Helen. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 68 on November 22nd, 1583 in Birgham,Eccles,Berwickshire,Scotland.
