Margaret was born in 1506 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Margaret's father was Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and her mother was Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. Her paternal grandparents were John Cockburn and Margaret Hepburn. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Ninian, Alexander, Ninian, Sir John II, Marion and Lady Helen. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 84 in 1590 in Kent, England.
