Lady Helen was born in 1510 in Ormston, Eastlothian, Scotland. Lady Helen's father was Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and her mother was Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. Her paternal grandparents were John Cockburn and Margaret Hepburn. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Ninian, Alexander, Ninian, Sir John II, Marion and Margaret. She was the third youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 50 in 1560 in Ormiston Castle, East Lothian, Scotland.
