Ninian was born in 1503 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Ninian's father was Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and his mother was Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. His paternal grandparents were John Cockburn and Margaret Hepburn. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Ninian, Sir John II, Marion, Margaret and Lady Helen. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 76 on May 6th, 1579 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland.
