Alison was born in 1542 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Alison's father was Sir John II Cockburn, 8th Laird Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and her mother was Alison of Calder Lady Cockburn of Ormiston Sandilands. Her paternal grandparents were Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. She had eleven brothers and three sisters, named Alexander John, SIR JOHN, Sir John Jr., Samuel, William, Alexander, John 9th Baronet of Ormiston, Sir John, Sir John, Samuel of Wester Tempilhall In The Constabulary of Haddington, Patrick, Lady Barbara, Sibil and Lady Janet. She died at the age of 58 in July 1600.
