Alexander was born in 1543 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Alexander's father was Sir John II Cockburn, 8th Laird Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and his mother was Alison of Calder Lady Cockburn of Ormiston Sandilands. His paternal grandparents were Sir William Cockburn 7th Laird of Ormiston, Lord High Sheriff of Berwick and Lady Janet Somerville Baroness Ormiston. He had ten brothers and four sisters, named Alexander John, SIR JOHN, Sir John Jr., Samuel, William, John 9th Baronet of Ormiston, Sir John, Sir John, Samuel of Wester Tempilhall In The Constabulary of Haddington, Patrick, Alison, Lady Barbara, Sibil and Lady Janet. He died at the age of 19 in September 1562.
