Ellen was born in 1832 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Ellen's father was Patrick Donovan and her mother was Mary Holland. Her paternal grandparents are Patrick Donovan and Catherine Kenefeck; her maternal grandparents are JOHN DONOVAN and MARY HOLLAND. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Daniel, Thomas, Richard, John, Susanna and Julia. She is the second oldest of the seven children.
