John was born on July 22nd, 1840 in Liverpool, Lancashire, United Kingdom. John's father was Patrick Donovan and his mother was Mary Holland. His paternal grandparents are Patrick Donovan and Catherine Kenefeck; his maternal grandparents are JOHN DONOVAN and MARY HOLLAND. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, Thomas, Richard, Susanna, Ellen and Julia. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 63 in January 1904.
