Kathleen was born in July 1892 in Preston, Lancashire.  Kathleen's father was John Joseph whelan and her mother was Elizabeth Moran.  Her paternal grandparents are james whelan and julia bryan; her maternal grandfather was Thomas Moran and her maternal grandmother is Not Filled. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas Patrick, Charles, Patrick, Vincent, Julia Mary and Cecilia.  She is the fourth oldest of the eight children.
