Francis Reid was born on March 26th, 1814 in New Abbey, Kincardineshire, Scotland. Francis Reid's father was Samuel Marjoribanks and his mother was Mary Reid. His paternal grandfather was James Marchbank and his paternal grandmother is Mary Kirkpatrick; his maternal grandparents are James Reid and Annie Halliday. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Samuel, David, Elizabeth and Jane. He is the third oldest of the six children.
