Samuel was born on April 12th, 1812 in , Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland.  Samuel's father was Samuel Marjoribanks and his mother was Mary Reid.  His paternal grandfather was James Marchbank and his paternal grandmother is Mary Kirkpatrick; his maternal grandparents are James Reid and Annie Halliday. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Francis Reid, David, Elizabeth and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 58 in May 1870 in Prince Edward Island Canada.
